Vision correction is a matchmaking process. For many, contacts or glasses are an excellent match. With the latest advances in lasers and surgical procedures, there are several other options available to correct vision problems, as well. LASIK, PRK, phakic intraocular lenses, and refractive lens surgery with presbyopia- or astigmatism-correcting intraocular lenses are just a few of the choices you have. During a free LASIK or “Refractive” evaluation at Hunkeler Eye Institute, we take the time to extensively examine your eyes, learn about your individual needs and vision goals, and help you find the ideal match to achieve the vision you have always wanted. Should you decide LASIK or another refractive procedure is your match, we strongly recommend you select a skilled surgeon with a commitment to technology and training. Our office was the first LASIK provider in the Kansas City metropolitan area and continue to evaluate, utilize, and participate in the innovation of the most cutting edge technologies and techniques. Our office has performed thousands of refractive surgical procedures and is now led by Dr. Dustin McKnight, a board-certified Ophthalmologist with additional extensive training in refractive surgery. We will also discuss potential risks. We encourage you to view LASIK surgery as an important medical decision, and not an assembly line procedure. But also take comfort in knowing that the complication rate for LASIK and other refractive procedures is very low, making them among the safest surgical procedures around. Many patients will identify refractive surgery or LASIK as one of the most meaningful and life-changing decisions they have made. We look forward to meeting you, learning about you, and helping you find your refractive surgery match.

LASIK

One of the most popular ways to correct vision is with a procedure called LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis), which uses a laser to change the curvature of the cornea (outer window of the eye). LASIK has quickly become the procedure of choice for most patients because they recover quickly and have fewer side effects and complications than with other methods of vision correction. In fact, most LASIK patients notice a significant improvement in their vision soon after surgery. LASIK removes tissue within the cornea to treat low to high levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism:To treat nearsightedness, the steep cornea is made flatter by removing tissue from the center of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from in front of the retina to directly on the retina.● To treat farsightedness, the flat cornea is made steeper by removing tissue outside of the central optical zone of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from behind the retina to directly on the retina.● To treat astigmatism, the cornea is made more spherical -- like a basketball instead of a football. This eliminates multiple focusing points within the eye and creates one point of focus on the retina. Astigmatism can be treated at the same time as nearsightedness and farsightedness.

LASIK is for those who:

Want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts
Are at least 18 years of age
Have had a stable eye prescription for at least one year
Have no health issues affecting their eyes
Have no signs of glaucoma or cataracts
    Not currently pregnant.
Ability to lay in a flat position for at least 20 minutes
Willingness to stay out of contact lenses for 2-4 weeks prior to surgery.
